HALF-BLOOD PRINCE DISCUSSION - SPOILERS!! (DUH) « Thread Started on Jul 16, 2005, 8:46pm »
WELL. I finished the book at 7:20 pm, making my reading time 5 hours and 20 minutes, though that time includes several breaks to walk around the house and stretch.
The ending is sooooo sad. Unbelievable. And Harry's plans for the future?! WOW.
Comic relief: One of the best parts of the book: page 116.
Anyway, heh heh, when you all finish, let me know what you thought. I thought it was well worth the wait: so many answers (a few new questions) and oh-so-sad! Dumbledore, Emmeline Vance, Amelia Bones, and Hannah Abbott's mother!!! Why do all the good people have to die?
The complete lack of evidence is the surest sign that the conspiracy is working.

Dumbledore's death scene was so sad. I wonder, though, which side Snape is really on. He DID make an Unbreakable Vow, but did he know what he was vowing to at the time? That scene is unclear. What did Dumbledore mean when he said, "Severus, please"? Was he asking Snape to kill him? Or do something else? If so, WHAT? If Snape didn't realize what he was vowing to do, and then, when the time came and he had to fulfill it or die, he did it, then ran away so Harry wouldn't kill him?
AND SNAPE IS THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE???????? Sorry, still sort of reeling in shock... That potions book, his all along? I guess it was sort of to be expected, with the Potions expertise, but I was sort of harboring a hope that it might have been Lily's... there were just too many references from Hermione (who is always right) that the Prince wasn't necessarily a boy.
Alright, I'm going to stop here. I will continue more thoughts when I get back from U.M. Army, which will be Saturday, July 23rd.
The complete lack of evidence is the surest sign that the conspiracy is working.

Oh my dear God. How can she do this? This is SOOOOOOOOOOO unfair.
Why can't she kill someone BAD for once? Why is evil winning?
AND WHY IS SHE SCREWING UP ANY CHANCE I HAVE OF BECOMING A WRITER WITH HER INFERNALLY GOOD BOOKS?????? I'm gonna be compared with her...just as is any other aspiring author.
Arthur: Give it up, boys. You're playing at war, but you're horribly outnumbered and outmatched. You're never going to win. Henry: There are no winners in war, Arthur. Quentin: And you are outnumbered heavily, my friend. Stop this arrogance and just sign. Arthur: Never! I won't surrender! Henry: Then Tremblay will fall...and you along with it. --Jordan Masters

Not necessarily... You don't hear people comparing, say, historical fiction works with hers, do you? It's just fantasies they compare, like Lord of the Rings, Earthsea, etc. Are you planning on writing a fantasy?
Anyway, don't worry about her, your writing is good too, and you've improved so much since you started - she's been writing much longer than you have...

Why haven't there been as many deaths on the evil side? I mean, is it because the good side doesn't use magic that is as harmful? The Death Eaters tend to make good use of the Unforgivables, but the other side, I think, tends just to try to incapacitate them without killing them... just capture them - maybe due to Dumbledore's influence, with his belief in second chances?
On a slightly related topic, how are they keeping the criminals in Azkaban, now that the dementors are no longer guarding it? Malfoy told Harry at the end of Book Five that his father would be out in no time, but (*trying to remember the details at the end of Book 6*) I don't think Malfoy Sr. was out by the end of the book....
And on a completely non-related topic, I thought JKR's first chapter which was 'thirteen years in the brewing' was very interesting - I had wondered how the Wizarding world conveyed certain information to the Muggle world while preserving secrecy... (such as Sirius Black, with the hotline, etc.)
More randomness, since I've thought of it: How has the Wizarding world remained such a complete secret? I mean, there are a lot of Muggle-born witches and wizards, as well as witches and wizards who marry Muggles. According to several sources in the book, there are hardly any pure-bloods left. Obviously, wizards and Muggles have mixed a lot. SO, how is it that so many Muggles don't have a clue? Apparently, whenever Muggles come into close contact with wizards (such as one of their children, a spouse, etc.) the witch or wizard does not have to keep their secret. How far does this extend? It just seems unlikely that most Muggles, including the Prime Minister, until Fudge contacted him, were so completely unaware.

I think the whole "muggle secrecy" thing is a load of bullcrap. I think that the muggles just refuse to believe in "hocus, pocus, magicy" stuff. Like Vernon Dursley. It is also my personal opinion that, like Vernon Dursley, most muggles must have their heads stuck up their a***s to not notice magic. I mean, someone other than Vernon must have noticed when Harry made the glass disappear in the zoo! (first book). I think the whole "the magical world is a world unknown to muggles* thing is absolute crap shoved down the throats of the general wizarding community by buracrats like Fudge. *deep breaths* I'm sorry for the above rant. I get really passionate about random stuff. But just because it's a rant does not mean that I don't have valid points.

In book 6, i though it was so wrong of JKR to kill Dumbledore, but i do think it was needed. I thought that Harry might have to kill Snape one day, but I couldn't think of a reason. Now he has one: vengence. This need for revenge also move the plot along. It in a way starts Harry (forgive Star Wars speak) on the path to the dark side. Harry has always remained brave and kind-hearted, but revenge could make him turn to the other side. It would certainly be an interesting plot twist.
I also believe that JKR may kill Harry in the end so that people don't urge her to keep writing the series. If this is to happen, Harry will have to be made vulnerable to Voldemort. If Harry starts to become "evil", it could weaken him just enough for Voldemort to finally kill him. Sad thoughts, I know, but may turn out true.

Okay, first of all, SHE CAN'T KILL HARRY. She's breaking the first rule of writing if she does, and that is YOU NEVER KILL OFF THE HERO OF YOUR BOOK ONCE THE READERS HAVE GOTTEN TO KNOW HIM. And that would make all writers everywhere rise as one and slay her. (Props to Lewis Black)
Secondly, I just thought of something tonight. What if Voldemort NEVER MADE THAT SEVENTH HORCRUX? What if he was going to make it after he'd killed the last of the Potters? Or, what if, by giving Harry that scar, Voldy actually made HARRY the seventh Horcrux? Then what happens? That would suck.

well yes i do know she would be breaking the rules, but it still might be a possibility for her to do that.
and i do think Harry might be the 7th Horcrux. but if that's true, then it makes my "harry dies" theory true as well. to get rid of Voldemort, Harry must get rid of the Horcruxes. but if he is also a Horcrux, then he must be gotten rid of to be able to kill Voldemort.
boy, jkr has either written herself into a corner, or just wants to torture us....
